Michael Dell

Jessica, November 16, 2023

Michael Dell, a native of Houston, Texas, displayed an early interest in technology, famously disassembling and reassembling an Apple II computer at the age of fifteen. After graduating from high school, Dell enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin, initially studying biology. It was during his time at university, in his Dobie dorm room, that he started a computer company, laying the groundwork for what would become Dell, Inc.

Michael Dell, along with his wife Susan, established the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, a significant force in philanthropy with an endowment of over one billion dollars. This foundation is dedicated to funding various initiatives and programs that primarily focus on promoting public health and supporting community development for children.

The University of Texas at Austin, Dell’s alma mater, has been a notable beneficiary of his philanthropy. The university received a $50 million grant from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation to enhance children’s health and education. This generous gift has been allocated for the construction of three new facilities at the university: the Dell Pediatric Research Institute, the Dell Computer Science Hall, and the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living.

In addition to these contributions, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has awarded $9 million in grants to support Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (T-STEM) Academies and Centers. These funds are aimed at sharing best practices through the T-STEM network and providing schools with access to professional development resources, as well as curriculum and lesson plans, thereby enhancing STEM education in Texas.

Beyond these initiatives, the foundation’s philanthropy extends to a variety of other areas. The foundation has made significant investments in urban education reform, particularly in supporting initiatives that improve the quality of education in under-resourced schools. This includes funding for teacher training, educational technology, and programs aimed at closing the achievement gap.

The foundation also focuses on family economic stability, supporting programs that help low-income families to achieve financial security and independence. This includes initiatives like job training, financial literacy education, and support for entrepreneurship.

Furthermore, the Dell Foundation has been involved in global health initiatives, particularly in developing countries. These efforts include supporting maternal and child health programs, nutrition initiatives, and disease prevention and treatment programs.

In summary, Michael Dell’s philanthropic work, carried out through the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, encompasses a wide array of focus areas, including children’s health and education, STEM education, urban education reform, family economic stability, and global health. These efforts reflect a deep commitment to leveraging resources for the public good and have had a significant impact on numerous communities and causes.
